Why can't I move my folder from iCloud Drive to my hard drive?

I'm trying to copy 28 MB of data from iCloud to my hard drive, but it says there isn't enough free space.

But it shows that I have plenty of space.

What is going on and what should I do?

Some things to try.

In the absence of more information and assuming you attempted to copy to different local drives I would initially suspect the problem to be network/iCloud related. Especially since you recently ran out of space.

However, worth covering all basis.

  1. Make sure you are not moving around files still in sync process, and you have enough space in iCloud for all the uploads you enabled.
  2. Make absolutely sure local target is not located somewhere that sync back to iCloud
  3. Make sure you copy and not move the files (default is move). You can delete later.
  4. Try do download through Safari (hopefully you have a flat file structure as one cannot download folders through the browser).
  5. There are various reports and discussions of High Sierra especially on APFS drives reporting free disc space differently depending on which tools you use. Compare the free space reported in Disc Utility with what is reported in System Report -> Storage, and Terminal "df -h" command.
  6. Rebuild Spotlight Index. How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support
  7. Empty trash
  8. If you have multiple backup discs, make all backups are up to date. Also check for snapshots using tmutil, flatten if needed. https://ppolyzos.com/2017/10/20/how-to-manually-delete-local-snapshots-from-time -machines-backups/
  9. Check S.M.A.R.T health status of disk.

Hello ShinehahGnolaum,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to move a folder that is in your iCloud Drive to the hard drive on your Mac mini. First, try running First Aid on your hard drive with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct simple issues like you're experiencing.

Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Further to my last post. The more I think about it the more I suspect even though your iCloud don't show full that is is full because space are being reserved for files yet to sync.

Looking at the thread linked below it looks possible that things can get messed up enough that you need Apple support. So once you done with the actions in last suggestion (turning off iCloud), if it still claim you have not enough space on iCloud while you should have when you, for example, copy a file to it, give Apple a call.
