How do I move files from HDD/USB to my iCloud?

I am one of those that have only a small SSD and therefore have a large iCloud storage. I am trying to MOVE files from my SSD to the iCloud, but keep getting an error message that my disk is almost full and that I need to manage this. How can I MOVE the files from the SSD to the cloud?

iCloud is a syncing system, not an external storage system. Files in iCloud are also stored on your computer. One thing you can try is go to Photos/Preferences/iCloud and select Optimize. That will reduce the space required by about 90% when fully effective. You can also go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options and select Optimize.

For what you want to do, you need a different cloud based solution such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Flicker.
