iMac reboots randomly

Mid 2011 27". I have had a video card replaced and a disk drive on recall. Other than that it has been a wonderful piece of gear.

It probably doesn't reboot randomly. There is, I am sure, a reason. Even if it's a bad reason.

Should there not be somewhere in the system logs that will tell me what prompted the reboot? Like power button pushed, or signal from UPS or my power supply is dying?

I don't get any message about the system shutting down abnormally. I check last reboot and, for example, 08/01/2018 it rebooted 5 times.

If it helps, when I do hit the power button to bring it back up, I get a double chime.

It may not even be shutting down. It may be that it just doesn't wake from a sleep. Because I wasn't even on it yesterday (8/1/18) yet it shows 5 reboots and I had to hit the power button to get it to come up.

I may well be reporting one issue when I have a completely different problem.

Any help or direction greatly appreciated.

Skip,

There are four issues from your report I would like to address.

1) You have a blocked kernel extension. The blocked extension appears to be related to your UPS. This could be what is causing your random restarts. Since only part of the software is running, there is no way to predict what is going to happen with it.

This UPS software doesn't appear to have been updated in a couple of years. That is a red flag for anything involving kernel extensions. The easiest thing to do is get that Kernel extension loaded. That might prove tricky. Try reinstalling the software. Then, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and click the "Allow" button to load the kernel extension.

Unfortunately, that UPS software is not professionally made. The above instructions may not work. And if they do work, they may not solve the problem. You may need to completely uninstall it. That would be the only guaranteed way to determine if this software is or is not related to your random restarts. Again, unfortunately, the software has no uninstaller. If you decide to go that router, I can tell you what you will need to do. Let me know if you are comfortable with the command line. Uninstallation instructions would be easier using the command line.

2) Your Bayer HealthCare SmartLaunch software is crashing pretty much constantly. It is designed to be running in the background. Your only option is to uninstall this software. Then contact the developer. Report the problem. Maybe send them a crash report if they have any idea what you are talking about. If you are super, super lucky, they might have an updated version that runs correctly.

Since this software has hardware interfaces, it could be related to your random restarts. It might also be related to your performance problems detailed below.

3) Your EtreCheck report took 20 minutes to run. That is horribly slow and well into hard drive failure range. However, you have a number of big, external USB 2.0 drives attached. Try physically disconnecting those drives and running a new EtreCheck report. Hopefully that will get your runtime into the 4 minute range with "good" performance.

The performance measure in this version of EtreCheck is driven by one particular low-level Apple utility. For most people, it is a very good measure of real-world performance. But it can be inaccurate if you have multiple slow external hard drives attached. I have a beta version of EtreCheck (at https://etrecheck.com/download/EtreCheck_beta.zip). This beta version performs more accurate hard drive performance tests of just your boot drive. Those external drive could still be the cause of poor real-world performance.

Also, modern version of macOS are little more than hacked-up versions of iOS. As such, they were designed for solid state drives, which you don't have. There are some limits to the performance you can get out of a mechanical drive with High Sierra. Your machine is running with the absolute minimum hardware requirements for High Sierra. Installing an SSD inside an iMac is not an easy or inexpensive task. You do have Thunderbolt so an external SSD boot drive is an option for a future upgrade.

4) You seem to have adware installed. The "~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.TechResultsSearch.plist" file looks suspicious. This looks like a new strain. I have seen something similar before.

You can't remove adware by dragging anything to the trash. You will need to run another EtreCheck report and then use the "Remove" feature under "Unsigned Files". You could also use a good AV software like MalwareBytes. Unfortunately, MalwareBytes has a kernel extension too. Maybe defer that to a later time when you aren't having other kernel extension issues. Just use EtreCheck for now. (You could use that beta version of EtreCheck since it won't count against that 5-run limit.)

The trick is that you have to stop the adware from running before you delete any files. Otherwise, it could just reinstall itself, perhaps morphing to a new name. Sometimes adware does that.

That's a fair bit of work for you to do. I'll let you get started. Let me know if you have any questions.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free to download and use at first, it will eventually ask you to buy a license. There are also other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

I just added a new UPS and downloaded the only thing, I found, that spoke to APC. Not needed and can get rid of that. I want/need to know how to "unblock" such extensions. Learnings to be done. Or better yet, in this case, remove it in its entirety. That work as well?

One of my major problems in life is I am a pack rat. I haven't used the Bayer software in over a year. But then my system is 7 years old and this is a problem I will really have to address. Cleanup. Also, I really thought I had a handle on what was running in the background. Again, more learning to do.

OK. Ran EtreCheck w/o the drives installed. Just at 5+ minutes. "Below average". External boot drive is worth looking into. At $2k plus to replace the iMac, it might be a cheap, relatively, add on.

Not sure I understand about the "minimum hardware" to run HS. I am also running it, quite successfully, on an i5 iMac as well as an i3 Macbook Air and an i5 Macbook Air. All mid 2011.

Adware? That would be embarassing. Just having such on my system. One assumes that if I run the EtreCheck Beta under Safe Mode, that might catch the adware before it starts?

My knowledge level of kernel extensions is such that if I study for a week I will be all the way up to just stupid.

Your assistance is very much appreciated and I will be looking into all of the above. If I get totally stumped, I might well take you up on your offer of helping with my questions. Next time we speak, I am sure I will be using a licensed version of your software.

Again, thanks.

And what about this. If I do a complete backup, sans system files, and scrub the thing and after a system restart/reload from scratch. I.E. only load back that which I feel I need?

You were not spammed! EtreCheck is free and if was developed by a respected member of these communities. It is commonly used by members here to help diagnose issues, please do a search on these forums and you will find it is a well respected tool. It will not post ANY personal information.

Posting an EtreCheck report helps us diagnosed issues that may not be apparent otherwise. If you do not want to use it that is your choice, at that point your best bet is to take the computer to an independent AASP to be professionally diagnosed.

Without any useful information that is the best we can offer or you can attempt basic resets such as a NVRAM reset, restart in Safe Mode, etc..

Good luck.

End of report

Any assistance gratefully received. I am afraid this will lead to a power supply or system board. About 2 years ago, Apple replaced my video card.

Aug 16, 2018 7:12 AM in response to etresoft

I did rerun - got better results. Did unmount the drives, but had Parallels running and Windoze applications at the same time. Did, after the fact, get Etrecheck to remove my "adware" perp. Know there are bunch more things I can do, but going to see how this thing reacts now. Did pop the APC software. Figure if I lose power, I'll probably know it. Auto power off would be nice, but if I'm not here it won't be on anyway.

I'll post back my reboot/shutdown report after a few days. I have high hopes.

Here's the latest run of my, now, perfectly legal copy of Etrecheck (said it would update itself after payment?):

EtreCheck version: 1.0b11 (1A012)

End of report

May still be running your beta - I am checking for updates now. So...hope I'm now "legal"?

I cannot tell you how much I have appreciated your assistance in this. Thank you.

From their website:

"How to purchase a license for EtreCheck 4

Note: The costs of doing business worldwide vary by region. In order to provide a fair price for all customers, the price for EtreCheck is based on your location. For example, the price in the USA is $10 USD. But due to significantly higher costs, the price in the EU is €15.00 (VAT included).

Step 1

Download EtreCheck

The only way to purchase a license for EtreCheck is with EtreCheck itself..."

It goes on to other steps, but this is where I stopped reading. For me, it just looks like another brand of "Mac Keeper".

I know nothing of it, had not heard of it before. What was I supposed to assume? I have used, to good effect, these "Official Apple" forums before and this is the first time I had seen such a thing. I was expecting native MacOS directives for a solution.

Not sure what happened to my reply to you. Bit evaporation or some such. Anyway if this is a repeat I apologize.

I thank you for your response. In short I did not know one could leave a system running for any long periods in safe mode. Know that it keeps things from auto starting but did not know if important system processes were inhibited as well.

Right now, it appears to randomly reboot/restart/shutdown every 2 to 6 hours.

I understand why you make the suggestion, to try to isolate a hardware initiated event or software.

I will look into this and again, thank you for your response.

You're most welcome.

And I am going to call it "soup" at this time. I will work with what I have learned and see what happens. I just may be in need of an upgrade. Which is a scary thought only due to price. Wonderful otherwise. But I do have a really good system, even by today's standards.

If I learn anything of note or usefulness, I will update this thread.

Otherwise, to all that have responded, thank you and I will check out Etrecheck.

Skip,

Unless someone is hacking the app, it isn't possible to not be "legal". EtreCheck is designed to be used for free. I only want people to pay if their problem is resolved and they want to keep using the software.

There are obviously still some bugs in the beta. But that isn't your job to fix.

Unfortunately, with some problems, the only thing you can do is apply fixes and wait to see if the problem ever returns. If it doesn't, then maybe try to reinstall updated versions of the software that caused the problem in the first place. The idea behind these diagnostic efforts is not to get rid of 3rd party software. The idea is to find out what, exactly, is causing a particular problem. Once you are confident the problem is gone and that you can properly install and uninstall any potentially problematic software, you can keep trying to install that software if you really need it, or reinstall updated versions or alternatives, or reinstall any software that ultimately proved to be innocent of any damage.

As far as EtreCheck goes, it is designed to help you solve problems. But it is an automated tool so it may complain about all kinds of things. That doesn't necessarily mean you need to worry about them. You weren't happy with your experience before, so that was a problem that needed fixing. If you are happy now, then there probably isn't any more you need to do.

Well, for any misunderstandings, or hysteria on my part I apologize. And I probably read the comment wrong when I paid for my copy. That is that the software would "auto" understand, in effect, that a license had been bought. In my house, conclusion jumping is a participant sport.

I am EXTREMELY pleased with the results I am getting from Etrecheck. I don't understand a 10th of what I am reading, yet. But I will.

It also shows me the "stuff", to use a polite word, that I have had hanging around for years. Also appreciated.

And again, you assistance, and patience, have been invaluable and much appreciated.

At this time, my iMac has not rebooted since this AM. This is, as yet, no kind of record. I will be keeping my fingers crossed and in the meantime, doing some housekeeping.

Again, "etresoft" thank you.
