I've cleared my cache, shut down and restarted laptop (macbook pro), used disk utility first aid, and still the problem persists.

Try quitting your VPN. There are some that don't work with Safari.
See if this helps with the VPN.
Safari and Mail don't work properly with a VPN
Not directly related to the problem, most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.
Check for any remaining associated files using these programs.

After emptying cache and history again, updating my OS, disabling and even uninstalling AdBlock, nothing is working. It's pretty frustrating. I haven't been using any other extensions; no cleaning/optimizing/tuneup apps.
I can scroll through individual profile pages, but the newsfeed is DOA.
It all started mysteriously. I just don't get it.

If you don't use Facebook, is there any other page in Safari causing similar issues? If it's only Facebook you can try with another browser.
please help.... FB won't work and is using too much memory when launched in safari

Well, I don't know what that issue was all about. It cleared up just as mysteriously as it began. Who knows??
