When I select and check the "Desktop and Documents" option and select Done, next time I go back the box is unchecked.

On my iMac running High Sierra, I went to System Preferences/icloud, and selected the options button next to iCloud Drive. The first item displayed is "Desktop & Documents Folders". I unchecked that box and exited out of system preferences. A while later I went back to iCloud and checked the box to turn it back on. The problem is that option will not stay checked. When I come back to that option the box is unchecked. Can anyone help me?

😁 - not an idiot at all! But I did mean that you needed to try to sign out of iCloud on your Mac and then back in again. iCloud should display a message that allows you to select "Keep" to keep a copy of your iCloud data on the Mac. That creates an iCloud archive file which can be found in your Home folder on your Mac.

The only drawback is that although Mail, Contacts, and Calendar reload pretty quickly, it does take a little time to get Notes, iCloud Drive, and Photos reloaded.

I just signed out of my iCloud account to check all of this, and then signed back in, and my Mail, Contacts, and Calendar are all back in place. I sign out of iCloud at least once a month to do testing for this forum, and have not had any issues with everything reloading.

So, your call, of course, but that would be the next then we normally would recommend to someone having issues with iCloud settings or functionality.
