I have a new Mac. During setup I created a username which was the same as the username on my old Mac.
Then tried to use migration assistant to restore from Time Machine. Got error message that the account already
existed and only option was to rename the old account to a new userid.

That is normal. Migration Assistant will not overwrite an existing account with another of the same name. If you want to migrate your old account then let MA change its name for you or create a new account on the target computer using a different name. Then log into that account and delete the account you first created. Now, you can migrate.

Yep. Need to erase the disk then try migration properly.
If moving the files is your choice, then try: Transferring files from one User Account to another.
I think under normal circumstances the answer above would have worked--however since I had attempted to
copy files via sudo from the renamed-migrated old account
"myuser1" to the newly-created account "myuser", it is now impossible
to delete the newly-created account under "users and groups" (attempts to do so end with an error). So I will actually try to reset the system to
factory defaults and try to do it again without any conflicting user names in the way.. will post if that works.
The mistake I made (and why I find myself having to wipe out and start from scratch) was to try to transfer the Library files as well.. that's probably what left the new user in a position where it can't be deleted.
