arduino using a bluetooth port though usb.

I’m a little confused about serial ports and Bluetooth communication ports and programming using Arduino IDE on my iMac. About half the time I can’t properly access the serial port.

Anyone have a suggestion or workaround?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology similar to WiFi, but used on shorter ranges of up to 30-50 feet.

Serial communication is typically possible over a USB cable to serial adapter. Often sold as USB to RS-232 adapters, weather stations are frequently sold with these adapters.

I would have to look up your Arduino model to find out what it offers in the way of communication to computers.

USB is in fact a high speed serial technology where signals are transferred much faster than a typical dialup modem.

Bluetooth is an intermediate speed usually used by computers to speak to cell phones, keyboards and mice.

Hi sorry for the delay.

The Aurino IDE I guess used whats referred to as a Bluetooth bridge for serial connection over USB.

I do understand how BLE works. Arduino is generally flashed and programmed via a USB to mini USB via serial connection but the choices in the IDE are limited - and the virtual bnridge I assume it used becomes occupied and difdficult to conntect.

Under tools/serial/ports the list is

  • /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Serial-1
  • /dev/**.Bluetooth-Serial-1
  • /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Serial-2
  • /dev/**.Bluetooth-Serial-2
  • /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem
  • /dev/**.Bluetooth-Modem

its runs off a Silicon Labs CP210 USB to serial extension that you install.

Sorry for not making that more clear.
