In the iPhone Voice Memo app, what is the function of the “speaker icon“ shown in the top right corner of the app?

When I play a voice memo back and toggle that icon, the volume of playback toggles between loud and soft, but I have no idea what that means (what function it is providing). Does anyone know? Thanks for any assistance!

I’m on a rapidly aging iPhone 5s :-) My iOS version is: 11.4.1

Took me a minute to figure out what the “ear speaker“ was LOL. Now I think I understand! LOL. Thanks again sir!

The speaker icon changes where the audio is coming from. When you press it, it will then play it through the ear speaker (the speaker that you usually hear calls on). If you'd like to know more about the voice memo app this is a great place to start.
