After trying to delete messages from my Mac mail, got message that says "20,071 messages culd not be mailed to the mailbox trash - On my MAC

Additional to John Galt's advice — consider not trying to delete all messages at once. Instead, select smaller quantities (e.g 250 - 500) to minimize your Mac's resource utilization during the message removal.
When you are finally done, rebuild the specific mailbox (from the bottom of the Mailbox menu).
