"Enter Password for Other MacBook Pro" - this is the only one.

I'm a new Apple user and now use a MacBook Pro for work, thus the only Apple device I have.

I just updated to High Sierra, afterwards I got the prompt to "Update Apple ID Settings". I am first asked to enter my password to set up iCloud, which works. The next popup requests "Enter your Mac password to continue.", which seems to work too.

But then, I get a third prompt telling me to "Enter the password you use to unlock the MacBook Pro." However, the password is not accepted and I get a popup reading:

Enter Password for Other MacBook Pro

Enter the password for “*****’s MacBook Pro”, which is not the password for this MacBook Pro.

Since I only have this Mac and I only ever put in two passwords (AppleID and Macbook), this is the same one as in the second step.

So what am I missing here?

That is quite a bother, but I will try. I'm a bit confused though as to how it would solve the problem, since the password is the same as for my MacBook and since I intent to set the same password again.

If it doesn't recognize the password, then it doesn't matter if it is the same. However, there is nothing that really suggests that it is a problem with the encryption, its just the only other thing that would have a password. You have a very strange problem that I've never heard of. Have you tried taking it to an Apple Store?

What year was the Mac made? The most recent ones (2018) have an onboard encryption chip. Apparently, erasing those is not a good idea as it cannot be recovered. If it is older, then erasing and restoring from a backup may be the only solution.

My MacBook Pro is from early 2015. I have not taken it to the Apple store, because although this problem is an annoyance, I can still do my work. If I have the time, I will attempt to decrypt it and encrypt it again. Otherwise I guess I have to learn to live with the problem, we mostly use cloud services through Google Chrome, so I don't necessarily need to worry about this too much.

By the way: Thank you for your replies so far, Barney.
