Thank you! I did just that, and connected my Bluetooth earpiece to the iPhone and the batteries widget appeared showing both the phone’s and Bluetooth device’s battery levels.
The widget stayed on after having turned off the Bluetooth device.

Are you certain that it has not already been added? If you're looking for it in the "+" listings of widgets, look above in the "-" listings (or simply look carefully at the installed widgets).
If you're certain that the battery widget is not anywhere to be found, reset or restore your iPhone X.
Same here on both an iPad Pro and IPhone 8 Plus running ios12. Neither has the Battery Widget and it’s no longer listed on Apple’s Widget Page. Now can’t see how yo determine the battery charge level of my Apple Pencil. There must be another way..
Ok...this is a no $&@#! story! I went into BOTH my iPhone and iPad and the battery widget was not listed in the Uninstalled section. I did this multiple times showing someone I work with who also has a pencil. I just went back to show someone else and now it’s there in the uninstalled of both devices. Operator error? Bad eyes? Apple listening in? Magic? You decide! All is well now!
I have iOS 12 on my iPad and still have the widget. Look at the bottom of the widgets to add more, you should see it. If not, reset or restore the iPad.
What I do is i usually connect a Bluetooth device and if you go to settings it should appear
