Homekit Automation People Arrive/Leave Disabled

iPhone 6, iPad Mini 4th Gen, both iOS 11.4.1 (15G77), both using same iCloud ID:

When I first set up Homekit, the Automation tab showed People Arrive, People Leave, and A Time of Day Occurs, all enabled.

Then, I noticed the iPad's "Share My Location", "From" setting was set to the iPhone. I changed that to the iPad, since I wanted each device to show its own location.

I saw that this changed on the iPhone as well - and realized that this location is for the account, not the device. I also noticed that the Automation tab now only showed A Time of Day Occurs as enabled. The other two options had become disabled.

I changed the location back to the iPhone. Now, both devices show the iPhone under "Share My Location", "From". However, the People Arrive and People Leave options are still disabled.

How do I re-enable the Arrive and Leave options?

Got it! Don't know why my HomeKit setting changed, but here's what I needed:

Make sure ALL Location Services-related settings have Home or HomeKit enabled. These are in several locations, and the one I was missing was:

Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> scroll all the way to the bottom to System Services -> turn on HomeKit

So, all these need to be enabled:

  • Settings -> [your name] -> iCloud -> Home
  • Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Share My Location -> Share My Location
    AND set From to the primary device you'll use to access your home's devices (the iPhone in my case; I'm using the iPad as a hub)
  • Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Home -> ALLOW LOCATION ACCESS set to While Using
  • Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> scroll all the way to the bottom to System Services -> HomeKit

Note that there are two more settings that apply, but have different purposes:

  • Settings -> Home -> Use this iPad as a Home Hub: turn this on if you're using the iPad as a hub, rather than your Apple TV, say.
  • Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> HomeKit: use this to enable/disable permissions for the apps that will be associated with your HomeKit services.
