BT Email on my IMAC

I have a BT internet account and it was working fine on my imac running mountain lion

vial Mail then I did some updates - and it stopped, I then had to install another mail application and it works fine , my question is why does the BT internet account not work with original apple software , and if it does what am I doing wrong, thanks in advance

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Email via mail app

If you still have trouble, this article has more information and other troubleshooting steps to check: Apple: Mail Help - Mail troubleshooting

If you have gone through both article and still have issues, you might want to try deleting the email account, and re-setting it up again. I recommend this step only if your email account is an IMAP account. Please ensure your account is an IMAP account before doing this, as you can lose emails if your account is set up as a POP account instead of IMAP. This link can help you check your account type and the settings: Apple: Mail Settings Lookup
