Just came back from a trip abroad and twice now my airplane mode turned itself off. The phone was in my pocket while this happened! The way I noticed is that all of a sudden my phone buzzed as it was receiving text messages previously sent while it was on airplane mode! I will now have to pay carrier roaming fees!
Would Apple refund those fees.

No, Apple will not refund anything. Airplane Mode never turns off by itself. Something you did turned it off. As it was in your pocket, if you had Control Center on Lock Screen enabled anything that might have opened Control Center could also have tapped Airplane Mode.
If it's in your pocket with the screen facing your body the digitizer in the screen will respond the same way it will to your finger. For example, sliding the phone into your pocket can open the Control Center. However, it should not be able to call a number unless you don't have a passcode on the phone. For that see deggie's post.
That can be due to a defective digitizer on your iPhone. Get it serviced.

I was expecting the no refund answer, no problem. But can you explaine to me how does the phone go from the black screen to the lock screen while it is in my pocket and I am not touching the phone. I also have had my phone calling people while it is in my pocket often.
Is there a way I can avoid this happening
