internet speed on ipad air

If I am paying my Internet provider(Optimum) for 100 mbps what should I be getting in an Ookla speed test? I understand it would be less than that on an Ipad. I am only getting between 28-36 mbps. Seems low and trying to figure out why.

My iPad Air 1 (32GB wifi-only running iOS 11.4.1) posts about half the speed of what my MacBook Pro mid 2012 posts. I am traveling at the moment and staying in an Air B&B home in Boise ID with CableOne internet. I happened to test the speed about an hour before I saw your post.

The MBP wirelessly shows very close to the 100MBps speed that is CableOne's standard. The iPad Air is reporting 48mBps, both with Ookla. That may change with proximity to your wireless access point.

Speed is directly affected by many factors. From using 2.4 GHz vs 5Ghz band which 5 GHz can provide higher speeds but 2.4 GHz provides better range and penetration through objects like floors, walls etc. The device also plays a part in that it can have limitations in hardware for determining speed. Max speeds in specs only give theoretical maximum not realalistic real world examples. If you device is further away or the router is unable to produce a good signal then the devices is slower. 100Mbps is probably only achieved with a good LAN (wired) connection, everything else suffers from wireless issues degrading quality and speed. Try using 5Ghz if close to router this will provide better speeds. However 2.4 GHz will provide better range but reduced speed. Nothings perfect and you can also try adding a repeater in areas where signal is degraded badly or is lost.
