macbook pro mid 2012 running slow, not responding

Hello,

I’ve taken a look at the forums as to why my mid 2012 MacBook pro is running slowly (most forums point to ram or hard drive issues), my main concern is that while streaming netflix, no other apps open, it says that the window is using significant memory, at which point it becomes nonresponse, and I have to force restart the computer. I have already ordered a ram upgrade from OWC to see if it will help, apart from that is there anything else I should be looking into. I’ve ran the etrecheck report and included it below.

Thanks for the help

DivX is badly outdated that that can be a problem. If you use it update to current; if you do not use it, uninstall it.

Both of your Safari extensions caused a Safari crash on Aug 14. Hopefully, getting rid of Symantec/Norton will help that.

In support of Bob's excellent suggestion to completely uninstall Symantec/Norton, the last version of Norton that did not make a hot mess of Macs was released in 1999. Current versions interfere with Mac's already reliable built-in defenses. Official uninstall instructions: Remove Norton for Mac programs using RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility

I have the exact model as you. I upgraded the RAM from 4 to 8GB about four years ago and upgraded to a solid state drive (SSD) last fall. This computer is now as fast as most newer Macs. If you opt to go with an SSD, or even if you decide to go with a faster mechanical drive, I offer two thoughts:

1) Make sure any replacement drive is rated at SATA III speeds--that is 6GBps. One slowness problem with stock 9,2 MBPs like yours and mine is that Apple has a fast SATA III link speed on the hard drive bus but they install a slower SATA II (3GBps) hard drive, presumabl to save a few bucks. That's a bigger speed penalty than the fact that the stock drive is also only 5400rpm.

2) When you replace the drive, also replace the hard drive cable. The cable suffers a convoluted routing over sharp metal edges in the chassis. After 3-5 years of scuffing due to the vibrations of normal use and transport, the cable can wear enough to cause issues. The symptoms of a worn cable mimic those of a failing hard drive.

I bought this SSD kit:

OWC DIY KIT: Express USB 3.0/2.0 2.5" Enclosure +... at MacSales.com

and this cable:

Apple Hard Drive / SSD Cable For 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) main drive bay

when I moved to an SSD last fall. I am fully satisfied with the outcome.

I used instructions on this site;

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

You may wish to look at the install videos to assess your comfort level with doing the work at home. It is really an easy task, and the SSD kit I ordered included all the tools I needed.
