Disable 2 factor authentication

I need to disable my 2 factor authentication but the screen in my settings doesnt allow me to do that. The link to do that is not appearing. What can I do ? I have a Iphone 8 Plus and created the Icloud account last week.

It hadn't required a code in the past but I am kind of used to random behavior with all electronics after 23 years (First Apple computer was an SE30). The ATV had been last used about two weeks prior by a guest for Netflix or Amazon viewing. The yoga app was purchased (not subscribed to) from the app store.

It sounds as if perhaps your guests logged you out and you had to log back in. That's the only time that you would need to re-enter the code.

So, if I'm out, just me and my phone, in downtown New York (I live in California) and need to enter a code, what do I do?

It's important to remember that the "two" in two factor authentication doesn't mean two devices. It means two factors, one being the password and the other being the code.

The issue is that there are times when you may need to access your account and you will not have access to your authenticated device, whether it is because you lost/sold it or you are in a area with *no* cell reception.

There is also the issue of who "owns" your Apple account. Personally, I don't believe it is Apple's, or any other technology company's, place to decide *anything* in regards of whether or not two-factor authentication will be used without the user's explicit consent. I would argue the almost constant updates to the EUL only qualify as implicit, not explicit, consent since the average user never reads the thing and just hits the "accept" button.

In my case, I want the two-factor authentication removed because:

  1. My apple id was created when the challenge question method of account recovery was the norm.
  2. Two-factor is enabled on my account without MY actually setting it up. This is after a long hiatus from using the account completely.
  3. Only one phone number was associated with the account.
  4. I don't have access to the phone that was originally associated with the Apple ID anymore.
  5. a b bdIt took a full WEEK to gain access to my account through Apple's NOT-so-convenient Account Recovery Process. (A WEEK!! @#!?$%!@!!!!!)

I know the risks not using it causes to my account. However, I also know that Apple is completely unhelpful when there are "issues" with the two-factor authentication given the number of times I had called their Support line and got an "I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do" as the only response from the phone technical support.

The last time I had difficulty accessing an account because of a two-factor auth system, Apple didn't even have a means of account recovery established. Some progress has been made, I guess, but waiting a WEEK?! blech!

1. The issue is that there are times when you may need to access your account and you will not have access to your authenticated device, whether it is because you lost/sold it or you are in a area with *no* cell reception.

So, you are accessing your account how, exactly (if the device has been lost or stolen)?

And, again, neither cell reception nor Wifi is needed to receive a Verification Code on a Trusted Device (which is different than a Trusted Phone Number): Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication - Apple Support

If you read through this article, you will see that you can add multiple phone numbers to your Apple account, and they do not need to be Apple devices or even mobile devices: Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support
