The issue is that there are times when you may need to access your account and you will not have access to your authenticated device, whether it is because you lost/sold it or you are in a area with *no* cell reception.
There is also the issue of who "owns" your Apple account. Personally, I don't believe it is Apple's, or any other technology company's, place to decide *anything* in regards of whether or not two-factor authentication will be used without the user's explicit consent. I would argue the almost constant updates to the EUL only qualify as implicit, not explicit, consent since the average user never reads the thing and just hits the "accept" button.
In my case, I want the two-factor authentication removed because:
- My apple id was created when the challenge question method of account recovery was the norm.
- Two-factor is enabled on my account without MY actually setting it up. This is after a long hiatus from using the account completely.
- Only one phone number was associated with the account.
- I don't have access to the phone that was originally associated with the Apple ID anymore.
- a b bdIt took a full WEEK to gain access to my account through Apple's NOT-so-convenient Account Recovery Process. (A WEEK!! @#!?$%!@!!!!!)
I know the risks not using it causes to my account. However, I also know that Apple is completely unhelpful when there are "issues" with the two-factor authentication given the number of times I had called their Support line and got an "I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do" as the only response from the phone technical support.
The last time I had difficulty accessing an account because of a two-factor auth system, Apple didn't even have a means of account recovery established. Some progress has been made, I guess, but waiting a WEEK?! blech!
