Editing a Sparsebundle package contents to pass encryption
Hello everyone.
Everything I have read suggest that it is impossible to access an encrypted sparse bundle. I have been using time machine since 2015 and have a large backup of 2.42 TB on my 3TB Apple Time Capsule. (recently updated with latest software)
Earlier this month I had to perform a reinstall of my OS. It all went well, I installed it and restored from backup. It is my Mac but I use it for work so my drive is encrypted, the back up was encrypted and I entered my Time Capsule password and the Backup Encryption password, selected Inherit Time Machine Backup and restored as normal. no problems no changes I didn't change the password or do anything different.
• A few days later I was having problems with some apps not working and decided to try a clean install, by erasing my hard drive installing from boot menu and restoring files from time machine. except this time it didn't accept the Backup Encryption password!? Now I am Panicking.
• Tried using migration assistant but same thing, it can't access it either.
• I have spent days downloading and reconfiguring all the apps I use from the App Store and independent sources so the only things I need to try and retrieve are all my personal work and important documents from the time machine backup.
• I have renamed the sparse bundle moved it into a folder on time machine and created a new backup of my current machine.
• by showing package contents and swapping the token from the new backup bundle to the old bundle and some files such as info.plist and info.bckup I was able to pass the encryption and open it but wasn't able to access the old data.
I assume that the information on each file is specific to each bundle and that maybe editing some text in one of the above mentioned files could create a new link between them and allow access via migration assistant but here my knowledge falls short so I stopped before I damage anything.
Surely someone must know enough about this to show me what to edit or if that would even work?
Thank you.
