mail app smtp off line

I have been getting this error recently on one of my machines:

When I enter SMTP settings in Mail App, I only see the three which are online; the others don’t show up. I wonder where the others are and whether deleting those settings would help with the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What does the Mail>Window>Connection Doctor say? or follow the hotlink in the dialog box.

Did you ask your mail provider about a possible change to SMTP server settings? Follow the support hotlink in the dialog box>Learn more.

Did you talk to your IT department if it is associated with a University server?

You can always delete the account and add it back in.

Gmail's Default SMTP Settings

  • Gmail SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
  • Gmail SMTP username: Your Gmail address (e.g. example@gmail.com)
  • Gmail SMTP password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail SMTP port (TLS): 587
  • Gmail SMTP port (SSL): 465
  • Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

The google link is just general info by topics; nothing showed there.

The problem is intermittent. I think it's because there are too many SMTP servers loaded or cached somewhere, 2 of them offline, the official ones are fine:

What must be happening is that the offline accounts are being queried and blocking the action; so again, is there a non-destructive way to purge my machine of those settings? I know from experience that deleting and reinstalling accounts has not made a difference; and it's a long painful process to undergo (all the emails need to get reloaded per account). I'd prefer to find a more direct way of weeding out dead-heads.

Thanks.

PS: I am asking with our IT people, but this is not the first time and they were not sure what to recommend beyond deleting and installing again the accounts; I did, and the situation never changed. For some reason it's acting up only now again. I was fine for a year.
