Disable HomePod as a Home Hub

I have 4 HomePods in a 6000 square foot home and it seems that when only a certain one is connected as the Home Hub am I able to operate and control my Bluetooth Lock in the Apple Home App.

But now the one in my Basement office has assumed the Home Hub role and my Bluetooth Door lock is no longer accessible/responsive.

On the Apple TV's there is the option to disable, but not on a HomePod.

There really needs to be the ability to disables/control whether or not a HomePod can act as a Home Hub.

It does seem to be a mystery which Homepod is acting as a Home Hub and they don’t seem to share the work logically. That is one reason I am currently avoiding Bluetooth home accessories if possible (e.g. Eve).

The Home app in iOS is very uninformative and, as you indicate, has no option to disable Home Hub on a particular Homepod. I recommend that you send feedback to Apple (but don’t hold your breath).

One thing to try is, when all Homepods are asleep, try tapping the one nearest your door lock to wake it first - this might activate it as the hub (I don’t have a BT device to test this). Otherwise you might need to reset and reconnect all of the Homepods, starting with the one nearest the door lock and activating the door lock before other Homepods are brought online..

I agree about the Bluetooth. The Door lock is the only Bluetooth device we have for good reason, but I am unaware of any other way for wireless door locks to work with Apple Home at present.

In the Home app, you can see which device is the acting (connected) Home Hub, and which are on standby. I was able to disconnect the Apple TV’s. But since the HomePods don’t have an option for such setting, it appears the last one to boot attempts to take on the responsibility of being the Hub.

And when our Foyer located Pod is the one connected, while the other 3 are in standby, the lock remains reliably accessible.

For this reason, for now, I think I’ll purchase some WiFi plugins to toggle power on my HomePods. Maybe I won’t have to run up and down stairs to power cycle them to keep the Foyer Pod as the connected Hub.

I just wish Apple would consider setting up 3-4 story 10,000 sqft. home for testing and development. But My guess is that since the majority of investors in this technology, while in its infancy, do not have homes that large and spread out, it’s currently impractical from a financial perspective, even though they are a trillion dollar company.

The most discouraging thing is that there is not a dedicated support mechfor Apple Home...

I bet if Jobs were still with us, things would be a little further along...

As it happens I just bought a wireless power outlet switching device for another purpose. Ancient technology - it has 3 switches that plug into wall outlets and a simple wireless remote - but it works fine. I just installed one for an exhaust fan in the roof. I guess you could use a similar low cost device to switch your Homepods on in a certain order - until Apple gets around to fixing the problem.

Use Feedback - HomePod - Apple to share your thoughts with Apple.

With no HomeKit devices I don't have any practical experience, but surely it should be the case that it doesn't matter which device takes on the role as they should all be able to retrieve any instruction and pass it to any of your devices as required. If not then something else needs fixing in addition to gaining some control over which device is the active HomeHub.
