Hi,
iTunes music is usable in iMovie, unless 1) the song is DRM protected, in which case it will be unavailable for use, or 2) the song is stored in the cloud.
Regarding DRM: At the bottom of the audio iTunes pane in the iMovie sidebar, do you see a notification that "x number of files are protected and unavailable"? If so, the song you want to use may be one of those. To check, open iTunes and click on View/Show View Options, and then check the box that says "kind". Then open your iTunes library and you should see a column labeled "kind" that will show which songs are protected.
Regarding songs stored in the cloud: iMovie will not access iTunes songs that are stored in the cloud. The songs must be stored in the regular iTunes library. If your song is stored in the cloud, download it to your iTunes library and it should be accessible in iMovie.
If neither of the above is your issue, then it would help if you would provide more details as to what you mean when you say you "can't use" the iTunes song. What is happening that brings you to that conclusion?

Thanks, Rich. I actually discovered my error.... I was putting these purchased songs in a playlist, then trying to find them in said playlist in iMovie (they were not visible when I selected the playlist). However, I was able to drag and drop them into iMovie from my “Purchased” section in iTunes. So while I’m not sure why I can’t see the songs in the playlist, at least the outcome is what I wanted.
Great. Nothing like success. 🙂
