footnotes in word for mac 2011

I have some footnotes in a word document that have a large gap between the text on the page and the footnote separator line. How do you remove that gap? If I try the usual ways - just deleting the space - it doesn't work, it joins the text on the following page with the text on the preceding page instead of making a new paragraph in the gap.

MacBook Pro, iOS 9

Cindy,

Go to Insert Menu, Insert Footnote, look for this window. You should see option to place footnotes at the bottom of the page or beneath text. You'd want beneath the text.
