Mysterious "icon?" file in Dropbox folders on New Macbook Pro

So just set up a brand new Macbook Pro and have one mystery that seems OS related. When I synced my existing Dropbox account to it, I first noticed that all the folders (whether shared or regular) within my Dropbox are regular blue folders. In the past, and on my other synced computers, the shared folders displayed a custom folder with a three people icon. I later noticed that within each shared folder is a zero K file titles "icon?" These two things seem like they must be related.

On the Drobox forum they speculated that it might be a permission issue, and wanted me to an "advanced uninstall" of Dropbox that involved typing in all kinds of terminal commands that I didn't want to get into on a new Mac just to correct folder icons. But it is really nice to notice at a glance which are client shared folders and which are my regular folders.

Any ideas on what might be going on, or an easy fix?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 10, OS 10.16.3
