Trying to reinstall mac OS High Sierra from recovery mode: no permission

So my macbook pro (bought in 2013) crashed so I restarted it using the command + R button, until the Apple logo came up and started up. When I tried to reinstall macOS High Sierra to the "Macintosh HD" drive I get a message saying "The operation couldn't be completed. Permission denied." I've not logged in using my Apple ID because there is no option to do that, so I'm not sure how to attain this permission. Can anyone help?

hi Leroy, I have done this and fit said "First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume." This happened when it was checking the Catalog file. What are my options? Given that something like this happened a few years ago?

Hopefully you have a current backup plan in place.

The drive has failed or the directory structure has become corrupt beyond repair.

You need to erase/reformat the drive reinstall the macOS all this can be done from the recovery, internet Recovery or a bootable USBinstaller. This of course will be a 100% data lose on the drive.

Reformat as GUID/Extended Journaled

If you have an external boot clone you can boot off that to buy yourself some time, to come to terms—

What you depends on whether or not you have a backup.

No, backup. "bad"

You need to get an external drive. You need to install macos on the external drive. You then need to try some recovery software and see what data you can get back.

"Stellar Phoenix Macintosh - Mac data recovery software, recovers data from damaged, deleted, or corrupted volumes and even from initialized disks."

They have a trial version, so I guess you can see if your data can be recovered...

FileSalvage is an extremely powerful Macintosh application for exploring and recovering deleted files from a drive or volume. FileSalvage is designed to restore files that have:

-- been accidentally deleted.

-- become unreadable due to media faults.

-- been stored on a drive before it was re-initialized/formatted.

"TestDisk is a free data recovery utility. It was primarily designed to help recover lost data storage partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing a partition table)."
