I have tried the obvious things like selecting one of the duplicate playlists on the left when itunes within the "on my device" section but this doesn't work. I only have 3 play lists - some of which have up to 21 duplicates! I have no idea how this happened. I have been trying to resolve for a while. Can someone please help?

on the phone, open music and select a playlist to delete. Then on the right, there will be a circle with three dots. select that and delete the playlist from there. On the MBA open iTunes and right click on any of the playlists and at the bottom of the menu that opens it says delete playlist.

Thanks a million Welafever!! Your suggested solution got me 99% of the way there.
1) Instructions for deleting playlists from my iphone were clear. The only thing that threw me was when I pressed the 3 dots and chose "Remove" I was then faced with 2 options which I don't think are very clearly worded: 1) "remove downloads" or 2) "delete from library". I chose the latter which appeared to be the right decision.
2) Instructions for deleting playlists from iTunes on my Mac didn't work - initially. In fact, I had tried the old "right click" in the first place and had been surprised it didn't work for me. But I figured out why...There was a little drop down arrow just above "Purchased" on the left above my playlists appear which allowed me to toggle from "Music Playlists" to "All Playlists". Once I changed from "Music" to "All" I was able to right click which brought up a full menu of options, including "Delete from Library" at very bottom of this menu. For some reason, in the other view, I wasn't getting a "Delete" option. However, since deleting all my duplicate playlists, I now seem to have "Delete" as an option in both toggle views. Weird.
