You may not install this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition

I have the following error: "You may not install this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition" I am trying to install High Sierra. Just replaced my hard drive, installed OS X 10.8.5 no issues. looking to bring everything up to date and it's giving me this error.. any insight would be appreciated!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), iOS 10.3.3, iOS 10.8.5

Verify your macOS High Sierra - Technical Specifications


Verify you have all firmware up dates https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads/imac


Here https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads/macbookpro

following this jumps in the link above I see:

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.9




First I would go back to >AppStore an see if it presents you with a Firmware update.


2012 is quit capable of running the High Sierra
