AirPort Time Capsule Trip Kernel Panics on Two Different Machines

I recently started experiencing kernel panics on my MacBook Pro running macOS 10.13.6. I determined the panics occur during time machine backups. I suspect there may be an issue with my AirPort Time Capsule as now an additional machine is experiencing kernel panics during backup. I have tried erasing the disk via AirPort Utility and the kernel panics still occur. Is there anything else I can try for troubleshooting or should I just replace the Time Capsule with other hardware like a NAS? Thanks.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

I really think it is something with the Time Capsule. It seems odd to me that two separate machines all of a sudden start having kernel panics at the same time.

Yes.. agreed.. but it is hard to see how a backup to a network device can cause a kernel panic. Very odd.

Since you have done everything plus the clean install.. and it is only the TM backup that triggers the problem.. then it has to be something with the TC.

The TC itself is pretty well inscrutable. The AC model at 4 years is actually not doing too badly. They were not as reliable as the previous model. If you want to have go at it.. I would do a firmware downgrade.. 7.7.8 is fine for most people.. Factory reset and a full one pass erase of the hard disk.

Do the new setup with all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumerics. Passwords same rules.. but can be longer.

No luck then replace the TC.. but you might need to rethink backups as posted earlier.

One other suggestion.. trial Carbon Copy Cloner. It is free to use for a month. We see so many problems now with Time Machine to network targets that we now recommend its replacement. If you want to use TM then use a USB drive plugged into the computer.

What model is your TC? How old is it?

Time Machine is not very reliable on High Sierra.. although kernel panic is a bit more severe than normally reported.

Do you run any anti-virus software or extra firewall/security software. Either of those are known to cause issues. Adware and some third party hard disk utilities like Western Digital are also known causes.

I would find out what is the actual full error message as that might give you more insight into the problem.

Since High Sierra is so poor we tend to recommend buying alternative backup software like Carbon Copy Cloner. It has hardly any of the issues you experience with Time Machine.

If you want to keep running TM it is usually better to use local USB drive plugged directly into the Mac.

A NAS eg synology is very reliable backup target but not hugely better than the TC. It is a major purchase and not worth it for just backups. If you want to start using a decent file and media server then using it for backups as well is fine.

I am far from expert.. but I think this is internal problem on the Mac.

Did you upgrade the RAM?

I would do a few things.

1. Boot to recovery and run disk utility first aid over the disk in your Mac.

2. Run the hardware tests.

3. Reset NVRAM

4. Do not backup with power nap turned on.. Apple has fessed up that a lot of problems are caused by this setting. Turn it off.

5. Create a new admin user.. logout of your current user profile, login as the new user.. and run Time Machine with AV software turned off.

The TC is the 802.11ac 2TB version and will be 4 years old in December.

I do run ESET Cybersecurity Pro for anti virus. Both machines have been running it for a couple years now.

I did not upgrade RAM. I actually made no changes to either machine recently. I also had tried all five things you listed prior to my posting on here. I even went as far as wiping the drive on one of the machines and loading a fresh copy of macOS. Machine ran fine until I enabled Time Machine and then the kernel panics started and this was before I loaded any third party software.

I really think it is something with the Time Capsule. It seems odd to me that two separate machines all of a sudden start having kernel panics at the same time.
