Unable to play H.265 videos

Hi guys,

I am having problems playing H.265 videos on my Macbook Pro (Early 2015). The video came from my Mavic 2 Pro drone. I have tried playing the video in QT but the video is very choppy and there is a heavy lag on it. Tried on VLC but to no avail. Video dimension is at 3840 x 2160 (4k I guess) and codec is HEVC.

Specification Macbook Pro (Early 2015):

macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.16

Processor: 2.9Ghz Intel Core i5

8GB Ram 1867 MHz DDR3

Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

Questions:

Is there something wrong with my Macbook Pro?

Are there any codecs I could download to have a smoother playback?

Also, tried downloading Elmedia but the playback is same as OT. Any other software of your recommendation?

Would really appreciate if someone could help.

Thank you.

Oliver

I tried asking around and they said it might be my hardware as my MBP is an older generation but no concrete answers yet.

Intel says “Any 7th Gen Intel Core processor or above” for 4K UHD playback, as those chips have special provisions to help with HEVC decoding. A MacBook Pro Core i5 2.9 GHz 13" Early 2015 has an i5-5287U ‘Broadwell’ chip, which is 5th generation for Intel. Meaning that notebook will not be as capable on HEVC decoding as with 7th generation Intel ‘Kaby Lake’ processor chip, such as featured on e.g. Mid 2017 MacBook Pros and newer.

Try playing in IINA player. I found it quite smooth playback for demanding videos.

H.265 can have a wide variety of parameters, some of which may make playback a bit more demanding on modest systems. Does your drone camera have configuration settings?

There could be something wrong, e.g. a background process that hinders other applications. But that would need examination, e.g. using EtreCheck. We’ll have a look at its report, if you want.

Hi,

Tried the IINA player but still the same. I tried changing the settings of my drone and it works for 4k ( 3840 x 2160 ) H.264 but not for 4K ( 3840 x 2160 ) H.265/HEVC. I tried asking around and they said it might be my hardware as my MBP is an older generation but no concrete answers yet.

What do you think is it really a hardware issue? Does this call for an upgrade?
