Music on external hard drive

I have moved all my music to an external hard drive. I cleaned up my iTunes library, emptied it and scanned the music into my library. I'm missing some of the music, it's on the hard drive but doesn't appear in the iTunes library. How do I rescan only the music I'm missing, so I don't end up with duplicates in my library?

See Make a split library portable for general advice on storing the library on an external drive.

If you import the media folder to iTunes then it shouldn't make new copies of anything already connected to the library. If you're scanning another folder outside of the media folder and iTunes is set to make copies of anything added then it might. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for possible reasons that some tracks might have been ignored. See also iTunes Folder Watch for a tool that can scan the media folder for items that aren't in the library, or vice versa.

Most of my post still applies, although the second and third links aren't so useful.

On a Mac make sure that your profile has full read and write permissions to the iTunes folder and all subfolders. Use Get Info on the iTunes folder in Finder. Click the lock at the bottom right to make changes. Make sure that locked isn't ticked and that your own account has read & write access, then use the gear icon to apply the permissions to enclosed items and confirm.

Repeat with the iTunes Media folder if you have this on another drive.
