Lost Music Library after cancelling Apple Music

I had music on iPhone for several years, which I owned.

I signed up for Apple Music in June 2018, downloaded a few songs and decided to cancel my subscription 3 months later.

After cancelling, my entire music library was wiped out. I understand that Apple would remove the songs I had downloaded while using the subscription but why rob me of the music I had on there well before Apple Music even existed? (aside from forcing me to re-subscribe)

Is this a glitch? Can I get my music back?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you cancelled your subscription to Apple Music and would like to restore the music that was on your iPhone before you enabled iCloud Music Library.
First of all, make sure that you have turned iCloud Music Library off in Settings > Music.
You can also turn off "Show Apple Music" if you no longer need it.
Then sync the music and playlists you want from your iTunes library on your computer to your iPhone.
Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB
