Auto resize in Finder windows

My Mac Mini is running OS X v10.11.6 El Capitan.

Finder windows in LIST view always resize columns to fit the current view in the current window size.

This obscures long file names or file sizes and I always have to resize columns to see things.

How do I stop this behavior?

Column size in macOS finder Ever since the update to High Sierra, the column view size is screwed up. Every time I open a new window it defaults the column to the size of the finder window. I am forced to to change it EVERY time! Ugh. This should not default to the size of a window. What a waste of a time! Example... every time I open dropbox, I get a new window. The columns are the size of the window. If I download a folder the columns are wider than the window! This is a stupid bug that really needs to be fixed! Finder question Hi, I recently bought a newer mac running Monterey. I notice a few things that are different in the finder windows and am wondering if I can adjust them. 1) In the "gallery view" items in a folder appear at the bottom as icons which are very small. In previous versions the individual items were in a list and you were able to use a slider to adjust the size of the icons/gallery view. In the newer gallery the icons go sideways and it's a lot harder to scroll through numerous items. 2) In the list view I notice it doesn't always remember how a finder window appeared previously. For example, my documents folder has a lot of items. Every time I open that folder it appears small and I need to adjust it to see all the items. I find that other finder windows/folders don't do this. Thanks for your help. Gary

Need to extend Finder window to see full file info Hello, When I click on an image file in the Finder window in the Column layout, a thumbnail with file info pops up to the right. The file info is shown as below. Information Created Modified Last Opened Dimensions However, I try to scroll down and will not scroll beyond the Modified Line so Last Opened and Dimensions are not visible unless I extend the Finder window which is a bit annoying and hoping there's some setting that resolves this. Running the latest Monterey update but been happening since the earliest Mac OS I can remember. After all these years and thinking they would fix this, checking in with the Community for a solution. Hover your mouse pointer over the truncated filename, and the full name will appear in a floating tooltip.

On High Sierra, the Finder will automatically vary the width of the Name column list view to that of the longest filename in the current folder, and shift other contents right, while not increasing the overall Finder Window size.

The tekrevue page deals with manually adjusting column width in COLUMN view.

I want to turn off 'auto column width to fit window' in LIST view.

I only want the mac to remember how I previously adjusted the window and always display that way.
