Well, if it’s just one device, and there have been no interruptions or repairs (and no deleting of the device and re-installing) and it has access to WiFi everyday (I assume at home and overnight) ... then that really should not happen.
I happen to have a kid at home who likes to delete photos, so I have to keep restoring the photos he deletes. Fortunately he hasn’t figured out how to delete from the deleted folder. That’s another reason for me having DropBox.
I mention that because it might be possible that someone else deleted a block of files. I’m in the habit, now, of always checking the deleted folder, but before I did, it would have been possible for something to have been deleted and I would not have noticed it.
if you view the photos by the date option (the icon on the bottom left), it’s possible there to delete a block of photos with just one click. So, the only other thing I would think of ... is that someone deleted a block of photos and you didn’t notice at the time.
Other than that, I really haven’t heard of things going bad, like that, with iCloud Photo Library. But I’m still going to run DropBox, ‘just in case’ ... 👍
