Macbook frozen on login page

My Macbook has recently been freezing when I turn it on. When it turns on to reveal the login page, my mouse cannot move, and therefore I cannot login. I have the latest software installed. If I wait a little bit, I can shut it down and then turn it back on, which then takes it to the recovery page. One of the options is "my mouse won't work when I turn my mac on", but like before, my mouse is frozen so I cannot even click that option. Sometimes I'll be lucky and it will happen to not be frozen when I turn it on, but for the last couple days or so it has not been working. I've also tried pressing shift + control + option and shutting it down, which worked one time, but now doesn't seem to be a viable troubleshooting technique.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that might help.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.
