Finding and removing Genieo...

I think the title says it all . . .

Opened my computer this morning to find that some app named Genieo was trying to run itself on my Mac. I am running Avast, but for whatever reason, the app can't remove the infected file. It's found under this file: /System/Library/CoreServices/MRT.app/Contents/MacOS/MRT

I tried to open that folder, but I couldn't find anything related to Genieo. Where is this app hiding, how do I find it, and remove it for good?

Any advice helps!

1. You can remove Genieo using Malwarebytes.

2. Avast is one of the worst third party Mac anti virus software available on the net. It is invasive and very difficult to remove. Anti virus software is not necessary on a Mac and can slow the drive down significantly.

You can avoid malware by making sure Gatekeeperis enabled on your Mac.

Hello Carolyn, I was just reading your response about removing Genieo. I had Avast and it repeatedly kept telling me I was infected by Genieo but when I ran Malwarebytes, it found nothing. I ran it again, and again nothing. I went to Applications and cannot find anything. I haven't even downloaded anything recently. I did attempt to go to a website today but it alerted me it was not a real website and I went back. Do you think there is anything else I should do to check on this supposed infection (according to Avast, which I have since uninstalled).

Thank you!

If you are using Safari, go to your Safari menu bar, click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab then click: Manage Website Data. Click Remove All repeatedly until all cookies are removed.

Quit then relaunch Safari. It should be ok.

Avast might have been giving you a false positive in regards to Genieo but running Malwarebytes on a timely basis can help to avoid malware.
