My iMac freezes/crashes and an odd pattern fills the screen
Nothing responds EXCEPT the cursor will move but nothing else will respond--keys, clicks, esc.,etc--I have to power the Mac off and then back on to get it normal until the next freeze/crash.
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)
Possibly a GPU failure. You can try some basic resets however if it is hardware they will not help.

If those do not work, take the computer to your local Apple Store for a free diagnostic or you can also take it to an independent Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area.

Thanks--it's an older unit and I suspect it's what you suggest. I'm 2 hours from nearest Apple Store, but I'll make an appointment.
