i keep getting error in app store while trying to upgrade

i am trying to upgrade my macbook pro from OSX lion 10.7.5 to the OS el capitan so that i can upgrade it to high sierra however every time i try to upgrade to el capitan i get and error message that says i need a software upgrade yet there are no software upgrades how to i get around this so that i can use programs like steam again?....

Do you have access to another device/computer where you can log into the App Store/iTunes to verify your account. Try that, then sign out/in to the App Store and try again.

If necessary, contact iTunes Support. Either use the form or scroll to the bottom of the page in the 2nd link. Follow through the screens to get a chat or telephone option.
