can't add playlists to itunes

At some time in the past (I don't recall when) the behaviour when adding a new playlist changed.

In my iTunes (12.8) when I click on File/New/Playlist, nothing appears to happen. But in fact, a new Playlist is created, with the simple name of "Playlist". As it's a regular one, it's located all the way down the Playlists list, beneath the Smart Playlists and in alphabetical order in the Regular Playlists section.

Previously, when creating a new regular playlist, iTunes would jump to that Playlist, waiting for the user to add songs to it. But apparently, not any more.

Have you checked in the Regular Playlists section, under P for Playlist?

Sure, I was trying to think of a scenario where that menu sequence would legitimately fail. It might if the current focus was on some part of the library where adding a playlist wouldn't make sense. If you can rule that out then I'd go for a tear down and rebuild.

With an Apple Keynote due tomorrow we could be about to get a new build of iTunes. You could wait for that to see if it behaves differently or try a full tear down and rebuild now. I really cannot think of anything else to suggest at the moment.

You cannot use the menus in iTunes to create them, or you cannot import playlist files?

What is selected in the sidebar when you cannot create a playlist? Odd if that same focused item lets you make a playlist folder. 😕
