Where in icloud can I find my filevault pass key?

I encrypted my hard drive with FileVault. I chose the option to use my iCloud password. However, when the encryption process began the System Preferences panel read: "A recovery key has been set." It sounds as if a recovery key has been set in addition to my iCloud password, yet I was presented with no such key anywhere during the process. Additionally, as I understood it, I should have been asked to enter my iCloud password to access the drive on boot up, yet the system continues to accept and load the drive using the original user account password I created.

I am confused as to what I did wrong, or what is going on. Anyone got any suggestions/comments?

Thanks.

Mac Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 3.46GHz (5,1) 6 core (48G RAM 1333)

The article that tygb suggest is a great general over view of how FileVault works.

I found the answer to my specific question in a Macword article.

When setting up FileVault you are given two options. “Allow icloud to unlock...” or “Create a recovery key...”

For those used to writing down and storing a recovery key, you will NOT be given acces to it if you choose the iCloud option.

"If you choose iCloud, the recovery key isn’t stored loosely in iCloud Drive or as a file, but it’s tied into behind-the-scenes account information that Apple maintains. It’s fully encrypted in such a way that even Apple doesn’t have access to the unencrypted recovery key data, but Apple can deliver the encrypted recovery key to your Mac if you need to reset your password. You never see the recovery key nor have to enter it in this configuration."

Im curious how the "Apple delivering the key to your Mac.." would end up working. Kind of sounds weird. Maybe its an email you can somehow request through iCloud?
