Preview: PDF files opening to a black page

Preview has now decided to open certain PDF files to a black page. You briefly see the document and then it goes black. As a troubleshoot, I right clicked on a file that this was happening with and selected to open it with Google Chrome of all programs and it opened just fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this. Thank you.

Try Acrobat Reader DC v2019 which is for High Sierra, and Mojave. Only Adobe can ensure that they keep the latest PDF features current in their product. Apple has not with Preview, and there are some PDF documents that give Preview severe gas.

Hi,

Preview on my Mac Mini running High Sierra seems to be the issue. As a test I opened the same file from Dropbox on my MacBookPro running Sierra OS and had no problems. I tried Acrobat Reader DC on the Mac Mini, don't really like it, to complicated and invasive. Acrobat DC did open the files but isn't there a simple Acrobat Reader anymore without all the cloud based interactive crap?

Ok, thanks. I didn't create any sign in with the Acrobat DC. Also, I'm scanning a lot of receipts, etc for my business and using the HP Easy Scan software and often times those are the pdf files that are opening to a black page. However, if I open the pdf file with say Google Chrome it appears normally. So the question is, is it Mac or HP related. I'll have to do some further troubleshooting to see when this is happening.

Update: Acrobat DC seems to be opening all my PDF files but I still hate it, to complicated even if you don't sign in with an account. Are you listening Adobe? Not everybody wants all these features, just a simple reader! Anyway, I digress.

My question is, what program would have been opening my PDF files before this issue started. It is Preview right? I'm trying to determine what is causing the problem when I create PDF. I either save as PDF (sometimes through the Print option drop down) or I use Export as PDF. I don't have the same issue on my laptop running Sierra, only on the Mac Mini running High Sierra.

Well, if you dig deep enough you can find a pre- DC version of the Acrobat Reader—however it is advised to stay current with the software for security reasons if you intend to use it.

You do not have to sign-in or take your files to the Acrobat DC cloud. You can use it locally.
