Apple Watch Series 2 stopped pairing with iPhone X

I have iPhone X and Apple Watch 2. Last night the watch stopped pairing to my phone. I THINK the watch is 2nd generation but have had it a fairly long time.

The watch has the red phone icon at the top of the screen after I enter my 4 digit code. The Weather information is also blank for current temp/hi temp/lo temp. It records my exercise on the watch, but does not sync with the iPhone.

The iPhone X shows no information on the amount of battery charge remaining on the watch. There is no information on it about the status of the watch. It offers the option of pairing with a new watch, not mentioning any previous paired watch.

I tried to pair the Apple Watch 2 as a new watch. The phone obliged with the outline of the watch-shape to locate the watch in. I did that. However, nothing happened on the watch itself. It was not in "pairing mode" as far as I could tell.

Potential contributing factors to the failure of paired status:

* I worked in the yard yesterday, sweating profusely, lots of dirt and moisture on my arms. However, the watch was not immersed in water. When I came indoors, I removed the watch and activated the "water drop" to eject any moisture. I did it twice to make sure moisture was removed. I placed the watch and the iPhone on their chargers while I showered. Afterward I donned the watch, entered the 4 digit code, and saw the red phone icon.

So......what must I do to pair or RE-pair/repair my watch?
