Why can't I update my OS X El Captain which is 10.11, to the 10.12?

I need to update my computer for excel but it says there is no update. I NEED this updated please help.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Depending on the secs of your Mac it may not be capable of upgrading further. Or it may be because you are looking for an update rather than an upgrade. Check in the AppStore for High Sierra.
