16 GB RAM for Late 2011 Model MacBook Pro

This is discussion has been had many times, I am sorry! But I had a silly question because I am not TECH savvy!

8 GB of RAM show specs of:

- 2 GB or 4 GB

- 204-pin

- PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz type RAM

What I am seeing for 16GB to purchase is

-240-pin

-PC-10600 (no 3 after PC)

Everything else matches, is this OK? I am assuming larger amounts of RAM might have more PINS - BUT I am not tech savvy so I don't even know what that is! I want to make sure to buy the right thing. I know even a simple 3 out of the spec could mean something. HELP to the Apple dummy, but long time supporter and buyer. 🙂

Mac is finicky about RAM— I would stick with the exact specs.

When you're purchasing memory, it's also best to verify that its speed matches that of your logicboard; otherwise, performance bottlenecks may result. At least this information is easy to determine from the memory's specs: If you have a logicboard that supports the DDR3 1333 standard (the "1333" references the memory's transfer rate, in MTps, not the actual speed of the memory, as is commonly assumed), you'll be fine as long as the memory uses that same designation. If the memory is slower (meaning, it has a lower DDR3 number) you won't be accessing your computer's full potential; if it's higher, you risk the processor not being able to keep up with it.

Thanks, leroydouglas! I was actually trying to match ALL the numbers that I found in the specs here:

MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support

But these specs are before everyone here in the community said it could go up to 16GB. I had looked at the macsales/OWC site but again, I ran into specs that did not match EVERYTHING. I got the 1333MHz. But the pin-hole numbers don't match.

But you did not mention those at all, so I guess as long as the 1333 matches, I am OK? When I click on 'memory upgrade instructions' on my own Mac in About Mac - I get the old the link above. Which is before the times of 16GB.

OK, so the link I looked at on Macsales for OWC did not have the 3 after the PC, yet the link you gave me does! So issue solved. 🙂

THANK YOU for a non-tech lady 😉
