MacBook Pro 15" (2018) Keyboard "t" key repeating issue?

I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" (2018) last week and have been absolutely loving the computer. As an academic, I do a ton of typing and have actually found the keyboard quite enjoyable to the touch.

Recently however I noticed a strange issue popping up infrequently where it feels like the "t" key on my keyboard will repeat when pressed. That means certain words "tthat normally dontt have multtiple" t's appear like so while typing. At first I thought maybe I was pressing the keys incorrectly, or subtly too quickly since I do type quite fast, which led me to testing out different key press pressures and angles. I find that if I slightly press the 't' key on its left side edges, or if I roll my finger over it, it will duplicate the tt issue.

I know this was one of the many keyboard issues that plague the 2017 MacBook Pro + TouchBar models but I thought surely this could not be the case with the newly updated 2018 models...I reached out to Apple Support which suggested I reset the SMC & NVRAM, but the problems persisted after this. Today, I used compressed air and noticed that while the t issue seemed to be resolved, it immediately resumed a short while after.

Do I have a faulty device? Will this need to be repaired or returned? Pretty unsure what to do since the issue becomes quickly annoying and adds considerable time to my writing and editing.

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), null

I'm on my 2nd 2018 13" MBP with TouchBar. Mine does double spaces and extra 't's and 'o's. Soooo frusttttrattting ! The 1st one (purchased in August) I brought to Apple store in October to address the issue, and they gave me a brand new laptop. The keyboard was okay up until a week ago. I took this 2nd laptop to another Apple store and they said it is indeed an issue that Apple has admitted to be ongoing and that it is an internal issue under the keyboard, so they will replace the keyboard and top case.

Sorry to tell you but it just gets worse. I would recommend that you take your computeer bck today and dexchange it for a new one. When it happens again, because it most likely will, takee itt back again. I am on my 5th onee and as uyou can see my keyboard is useless. I will beee going to Apple today or tomorrow. By the eway, my issues havee always starteed with the ee"e" keeey repeating everyonee eand a while and within a couple of weeks migratttes to to other keys and dissues. Good Luck.

Two updates from me: one, I did call to tell the people at Apple that this is an issue that is happening. I told them that I didn't know if I could part with my computer for any length of time, but wanted to add my name to the list of people that this was happening to. The very kind upper manager (who I was sent to immediately) said that it would actually be helpful for me to bring the laptop in, as they mark every computer that comes in with the issue and it helps them troubleshoot. Also, he said that since my computer is still under warranty, there might be a chance that they'll just replace the laptop when I go instead of taking it for a couple of weeks. I haven't gone yet due to time constraints but I'm much more likely to, now.

Also, that Unshaky app does seem to help a ton. Many thanks to the developer and you guys that found it. And it seems to imply that this issue really isn't totally a hardware based one, perhaps?

Same story. After 3 months 3 keys were repeating - ‘o’, ‘i’ and ‘t’. The top case was fixed under warranty, and now ‘i’ has started repeating again after only 10 weeks.

First time i took it to Apple they said it could take up to 30 days to fix which is a not an option - so I bought a Dell XPS running Ubuntu as a replacement machine. It took a bit of getting used to, but it cost half as much as the MacBook Pro, it’s upgradable, the cpu is faster and Ubuntu has the same development tools I was using on the Mac.

Apple ended up fixing it in about 2 weeks and I went back to my MacBook.

For the majority of people who are not professional typists, this problem will go unnoticed as they will assume they have made mistakes. But if you’re a programmer or writer it’s an extremely frustration problem.

If if it happens out of warranty I am not paying to get it fixed. Dumping a 1 year old, 3000€ laptop is not something I can get past and I would imagine I’ll switch full time to my Dell.

I posted a video of the problem

I swapped my first one out (2018, 15", touch bar) after the space bar kept repeating about 2 weeks in. This one has been about a month. Started with the "e" then went to other letters. Apple said I'd have to send out and have the keyboard replaced, and that Apple knows about it. Really difficult as this is my work computer--tough to take a week off work for repeated things w new computers... But thanks for helping me realize I'm not crazy!

After epic amount of BS 4 months ago to get a 2018 MBP 15" 1Tb keyboard fully replaced, my brand new keyboard replacement failed again, so now I lose my computer for another week while they do ANOTHER full keyboard replacement on it. In 15 years of being dedicated power user, this is the most expensive apple laptop i've ever owned while simultaneously being the worst apple laptop i've ever owned

There is quite a bit. It's just that Apple buries these threads. They're difficult to find and they don't come up on a Google search easily.

A lot of talk on YouTube and on other websites. They're recommending people stay away from MacBooks altogether. It's just not the time to be buying Macs.

Unfortunately the only solution they can offer is to redesign the computer, and we know how Apple hates to admit when they're wrong.

Take it in and they'll replace the entire bottom of the computer or give you a new one. Of course chances are that one will fail as well.

If it was me I would get my money back if possible. Go with one of the many excellent windows PC laptops (they even have dust and spill resistant keyboards like the X1 Carbon Thinkpad. Imagine that!). And if you're tied into MacOS, I would go as far as getting a late 2015 MacBook Pro at this point and avoid anything they make now. Including their very overpriced iPhones (which aren't selling).

What hurts the most is that they're doing these things on purpose. Look at the 15" and Vega chips. They sold them with the slow chips fully knowing 3 months later they would be upgraded and the overheating issue would be alleviated. And people who bought it were shocked when just a couple of months later the better one came out. And instead of offering that one they put up the Vega ones as yet another upgrade to charge even more. Apple is totally out of control. Oh yes. And the keyboards will probably fail on those too. It's unbelievable.

I found something that worked for me. I write a lot on mij MacBook Pro 13" (2018) as well and I noticed the same issue many others in this section have; my 'r' key kept repeating itself 90% of the times I wrote a word with an 'r' in it. I type fast and when I backspace things I like my backspace to be fast as well. So I started thinking that maybe the issue is in one of my keyboard settings. I always had my 'key rehearsal tempo' on the highest setting, just like the 'repetition delay' setting. You might want to check if your settings are maxed out as well. If they are, change your 'repetition delay' 1 or 2 clicks lower. This fixed the repeating key problem for me.

Maybe your settings are ok. I'd still recommend trying to change the settings and try out what works. The amount of people having this issue is not ok. This MacBook is very expensive and you expect quality, which I always expect from Apple. This issue is small and yet so irritating, I didn't pay €2000 for a MacBook that drives your autism crazy...

Apple you have to fix this! You're a multi billion dollar company, help your customers with providing a good solution, not the mainstream solutions for everything.

This MacBook is, besides this issue, a huge blessing for my studies and writings. Just a small disclaimer ;)

Greatings,
