MacBook Pro 15" (2018) Keyboard "t" key repeating issue?

I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" (2018) last week and have been absolutely loving the computer. As an academic, I do a ton of typing and have actually found the keyboard quite enjoyable to the touch.

Recently however I noticed a strange issue popping up infrequently where it feels like the "t" key on my keyboard will repeat when pressed. That means certain words "tthat normally dontt have multtiple" t's appear like so while typing. At first I thought maybe I was pressing the keys incorrectly, or subtly too quickly since I do type quite fast, which led me to testing out different key press pressures and angles. I find that if I slightly press the 't' key on its left side edges, or if I roll my finger over it, it will duplicate the tt issue.

I know this was one of the many keyboard issues that plague the 2017 MacBook Pro + TouchBar models but I thought surely this could not be the case with the newly updated 2018 models...I reached out to Apple Support which suggested I reset the SMC & NVRAM, but the problems persisted after this. Today, I used compressed air and noticed that while the t issue seemed to be resolved, it immediately resumed a short while after.

Do I have a faulty device? Will this need to be repaired or returned? Pretty unsure what to do since the issue becomes quickly annoying and adds considerable time to my writing and editing.

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), null

I am on my 5th 2018 13" MBP and all 5 have had this problem. Always starts about 1 week into using the computer and always starts with the 'e' key and then migrates to the 't, s, r' keys. I am at a total loss and don't know what to do. Apple seems to say that they haven't heard from anyone but me that this is happening with their 2018 keyboards, but here I am reading on this page that others are also having this issue.

Please Apple, let us know when this will be fixed.

How does any of what you wrote address my question? Because that certainly sounds like Apple is trying to help by offering solutions. Even if the solutions don't necessarily help, that still invalidates you stating that "Apple Doesn't Want to Help us".

"nobody eats burgers over $3K laptop"

Don't kid yourself. People foolishly sit a cup of coffee full of creamer and sticky sugar right next to their MacBook Pro. How many spill threads have you read? There are literally thousands for many different company's laptops.

Before this thread descends into a pro/contra Apple battle, I don't believe anyone is here to slag Apple per se. I do not agree that this kind of thing shouldn't occur, period. But I find it somewhat surprising that after 3 iterations of this keyboard, we're still not out of the woods. I think the feeling of these butterfly keys is not bad (and I actually like the fact that it makes noise so you can hear your keystrokes). But it's obvious this keyboard is not yet "done". And given the fact that they can't be replaced that is a deadly combination. If you could switch them out easy I wouldn't lose sleep over it as there will be a new model some day we can put in. But now we're left wondering if our laptops will remain faulty forever. It would be good for Apple to acknowledge the problem, let us know they're working on a solution and guarantee that in the long run we'll have a working keyboard. I don't mind battling through a year or so with this, but it needs to be addressed.

That video doesn't tell the story for everyone. My keyboard 100% perfect on my 2018 MBP 15". I'm not discounting people with problems, I'm just saying you putting up a video with a YouTube channel that has 13M subs doesn't make that video the holy grail and it doesn't speak up for all of us. I hope your issue gets resolved.

Same issue. Started with 'e' key and spacebar. Brought it into apple, they replaced the top case. Worked for 2 weeks then started again. I type about 120wpm and am a programmer so this is extremely frustrating. I did notice it happens when cpu is high or heat is high. I tried killing AppleSpell process and a bunch of others to no avail. If it's a software issue, they need to issue an update. If it's hardware then they need to FIX IT!!!

Add me to the list of people with duplicate keypress issues. I'm on my 2nd 2018 15" MacBook Pro. My first one failed 3 times, and it was swapped out at the Genius Bar. This MBP is only a week old and the "I" key is already duplicating on me. I love these machines except for all the keyboard issue that keep occurring. One thing to note is it's a different key that fails each time.

Same story. After 3 months 3 keys were repeating - ‘o’, ‘i’ and ‘t’. The top case was fixed under warranty, and now ‘i’ has started repeating again after only 10 weeks.

First time i took it to Apple they said it could take up to 30 days to fix which is a not an option - so I bought a Dell XPS running Ubuntu as a replacement machine. It took a bit of getting used to, but it cost half as much as the MacBook Pro, it’s upgradable, the cpu is faster and Ubuntu has the same development tools I was using on the Mac.

Apple ended up fixing it in about 2 weeks and I went back to my MacBook.

For the majority of people who are not professional typists, this problem will go unnoticed as they will assume they have made mistakes. But if you’re a programmer or writer it’s an extremely frustration problem.

If if it happens out of warranty I am not paying to get it fixed. Dumping a 1 year old, 3000€ laptop is not something I can get past and I would imagine I’ll switch full time to my Dell.

I posted a video of the problem

Well good luck with that if you think Dell is without problems. Visit a Dell forum and your eyebrows will raise high. Lenovo has a boat load of problems. People always think the grass is greener. Dell customers think the grass is greener with Apple. It goes back and forth. Do what you need to do but don't pretend the world is more rose colored with Dell or any other PC laptop.

Also I've been an Apple customer for the past 20 years. There's never been a time where the Genius Bar quoted a 30 day repair. It's usually 5-7 business days. I've had my Macs repaired during their busiest times and still got the repair done by the 7th business day.

So either you went to an authorized Apple repair shop or your exaggerating?

I’m sure there are forums full of people complaining about many things. This forum is full of people complaining about the MacBook Pro because the MacBook Pro keyboard has the key repeat problem.

Just trying to describe my experience so Apple can see how damaging it is for them. I have been using Macs almost exclusively for around 30 years and because of this I have just bought a Dell XPS. I am sorry if that triggers you.

Maybe you can find a Dell XPS forum where people are complaining about keyboard issues and comment there?

The Apple store that told me they would take 30 days was Apple Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. It’s a genuine apple store. The apple store in my mums home town in the uk often does fixes within a few hours of dropping off the machine. Different Apple stores, different turnarounds.

I couldn't care less what you buy. You seemed triggered by my response. I was merely pointing out that Dell isn't better in terms of problems. It's the way you posted. It's as if you were trying to annoy the forum by saying you're switching to Dell. Please enjoy your Dell. I'm happy with what I use. I think some people here simply don't like the fact that not everyone is here siding with them against Apple.

To demonstrate my experience in the most transparent of ways, I will not be correcting any of my keystrokes caused by the aforementioned issue:

This issue was present IMMEDIATELY out of the box on my 15" MacBook Pro (2018). There shouldn't havee been any dust or anything in the keys and theere absolutely wasn't (and hasn't been) any liquid around my MacBook whatsoever. The keys that appear to be affected the most for me are the "t," "e," and Space Bar keys.

At first, I just thought it was happening because I had been used to the older MacBook keyboards and may have been pressing the keys incorrectly. I then thought it might've been happening because I was using a silicone keyboard cover to protect the keys that could've caused interference with the mechanics of each key stroke. As I continued to use the keyboard and even tested it without the cover, I realized the issue wasn't gettting any better and (at ttimes) seemed tto happen far more excessively than usual.

I tried cleaning the keys with canned air, resetting SMC and NVRAM, and even a Full Restore and new user account, but the issue has persisted through all of the attempts to resolve. I finally called Apple and they had me run a system diagnostic which revealed zero issues and now I'm scheduled to head down to the Apple store tomorrow for a possible EFFA Capture. According to my brother (who was a Senior Advisor for Apple until last year), this is rare and is reserved for researching live field issues that will aid in preventing the issue in future manufactured models of the products.

As of now, I won't know what happens next until I go in tomorrow, but I'm hoping for the best. This issue has been extremely annoying so far...

I also bought a new MacBook Pro 15" , it is really amazing computer and its keyboard is quite enjoyable to touch. suddenly one day when i connect my printer to my computer it shows epson error code 0xe5 error. I have macbook pro 13 (2018) started having the same issue with 'r' key.. really annoying. I just went thru all 9 pages of complaining. Isn't this good enough for Apple to say it's their issue and do something about it? I really want to like apple products and hope they don't treat this as small issue. it's not small issue especially for developers...
