App Management Removed?

Is it true that mobile app management has really been removed from iTunes 12.8?

We live out in the woods, and cannot get reliable internet. We use iPhones with unlimited data and hotspots, but iPhones won't allow you to download updates that Apple has deemed too large. If we don't have app management through iTunes, we don't get updates until we head to the library up in town to use their wifi. They have really screwed us over if this is truly removed.

If it is removed, is there a way around it? I'm already irritated about not being able to use whatever earbuds I choose. This may be a deal breaker after many years of being loyal Apple customers. We may be forced to move to Android. *****, because we just bought five new iPhones for everyone in the house. I guess they have good resale value...

Downloading any software on a hot spot. Sigh. This is fun. Only 2 hours left. At least it is sort of a fix for us anyway. I guess we'll have to put the newer version on one MacBook so we can do the things the old version won't let us do anymore, and keep an old version on the other MacBook to keep our apps functional. I swear, I'd be willing to pay an obscene amount just to have real internet out here.

As noted you should really be opting for 12.6.5.3 which you can find at Deploy apps in a business environment with iTunes - Apple Support. This will support devices running iOS 11 & 12. If you only have one or two devices it is likely to be more efficient from a data perspective to let them update independently with changes from a prior build than download full app packages to your computer each time and update that way.

I tried looking for that one, but this was the closest I could find. I'm going to have to go somewhere with better wifi, because I am having trouble anyway. I can't rollback to an older version. I have tried everything I can find to uninstall or delete the newer iTunes, but it is all locked down. I'll dig deeper for that specific version.

Tried:

*Drag and dropping iTunes to the garbage.

*The directions here (there was a lot more, but this was the key part):

  1. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder
  2. Enter (without quotes) "/System/Library/Extensions" and then click Go.
  3. Locate the file "AppleMobileDevice.kext" and drag it to the Trash.

*Click the "Apple" menu and select "System Preferences." Click "Accounts" and then click the "Login Items" tab. Click the "iTunes Helper" entry and then click the subtraction sign to remove it from the auto-start list. Restart your computer. After your Mac has restarted, right-click the "Trash" icon in your dock or on your desktop and select "Empty Trash." Click "Finder," select "Go" and then "Go to Folder." Enter "~/Library/" in the text box and press "Enter." Drag and drop the "iTunes" folder to the "Trash" icon.

*cd /Applications/

sudo rm -rf iTunes.app/

I did try changing iTunes Sharing and Permissions to "make system the owner" like was suggested in some articles. That didn't work either.

All of them error out saying it is forbidden. I'm pretty frustrated. I think I need to get up and take a breather.

Where have you been for the last year?

I hadn't updated iTunes in a while, because again... we don't have wifi. We can't get it. There is no Fios or any other service out where we are. Rural America still has a huge wifi issues that developers don't seem to care about. Over 60 million people in the US still do not have access to it. We are just kind of left to rot as tech moves on. Thanks for the info. I'll go see what can do.

We've tried satellite, four different companies. It is very low speed, doesn't work when it rains (live in Florida...it always rains), and it all has major data and bandwidth caps. Companies like HughesNet don't just slow you down, they totally cut you off if you accidentally exceed the bandwidth, which isn't hard to do. My kids would be doing nothing but school work, and they would be cut off with bandwidth exceeded messages. It would take 2 or 3 days for them to restore service. You can't do much more than check your email here and there with residential sattelite, really. I used to work remotely for Answers.com, and it was a constant struggle. The tech guys there looked into it and tried to find us other options as well. There just aren't many. Thanks for the info, and for trying to find something better.

I have tried everything I can find to uninstall or delete the newer iTunes, but it is all locked down.

You just run the installer and it removes the current iTunes.

This is like to the instructions I followed.

What version of macOS are you using? You may have to turn off SIP, System Integrity Protection.
