Mail out of office rule malfunctions - what is the defect?

I followed some online directions on how to set up a rule for out of office automatic replies to email - Mail went berserk and I have over 1200 out of office replies I have to delete on about 10 emails received - why has Mail done this? I probably will never use this feature again as I don't have time to delete +1200 emails off of multiple devices.

Apple Mail does not provide an out of office facility. Your mail ISP offers this on their site, and if iCloud, then iCloud Mail has an “out of office” counterpart. I recommend that you review your mail ISP instructions for setting up “out of office” responders, and there should be a selectable that limits it once to the same sender.

Not disputing the need for Apple Mail to provide an out-of-office solution.

The trick to making web instructions work is to always look at the date and/or operating system release timeframe before assuming that what was posted will remain an eternal solution for all future Mac operating systems, or applications. Apple regularly changes stuff. And there are those that publish absolute rot that does not work properly — ever.
