Dell Laptop CD Player will not burn to cd and does not recognise audio cd's anymore. Not sure if it happened after an Apple Upgrade or if the cd player is now faulty.

Try HT203242: iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install (Document retired, archive version) (Formerly TS2308).
Try tearing out iTunes, test the behaviour of the drive when iTunes isn't installed, then reinstall. See the second box of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
