Youtube video playback problem and cursor misalignment

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro. For a very long time now I have some problems using youtube in Safari.

When I play a video there is always a blank space on the right and the bottom side of the video. This also happens when I want to play the video in full screen mode, then a part of the right side, and the bottom part of the screen is black. So the video never plays full screen. (see pictures)

Another problem is that the cursor is always misaligned with the slider of the slider bar in youtube. I have to place the cursor a few centimeters to the right of the slider to control it. The more I go to the right of the screen, the farther I need to place the cursor to the right of the slider to control it.

These problems only seem to happen in Safari. The misalignment of the cursor also happens in Google Maps in Safari.

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem without having to switch to another browser?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Allan,

Thanks for your quick reply.

It happens with all the videos on YT. As far as I can see I don't have any extensions installed.

I did try your suggestion to log in using another account. And it did solve the problem!

I can list the report here if it can help you further to analyse the problem.

Does this affect any YT video or only some?

I just tested YouTube from my 2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch (entry-level version) running latest Safari and had no issues. My Safari install has no extensions, and my Mac has no third-party "fearware" installed (anti-virus, "cleaning"aps, etc).

My first suspect is a Safari extension, followed by the fearware. If you have extensions installed. use Safari Preferences > Extensions tab to turn off all extensions. Restart Safari and test to see if the problem persists. Post back is this helps so we can provide follow-up actions to identify the culprit.

Another useful diagnostic is to create a new user account in System Preferences > User & Groups just for testing. Log in using the new test account and see what happens. If YT videos display without issue from the test account, you have a software conflict.

Software interference can be best diagnosed in this forum setting by your posting asnapshot of your system configuration. Fortunately there is a safe and secure way to do that.

A respected and long-serving member of these communities has created a simple utility that will take that "snapshot" of your configuration without revealing any sensitive information about you and your computer. It only runs when you tell it to, not in the background, and therefore creates no performance penalties. It is Etrecheck, and is available here:

http://etrecheck.com/

Run it and, when its results display, select "Report" from the left-hand pane (scroll down), then click Etrecheck's "Share Report" icon followed by "Copy Report" from the resulting dropdown. Paste the entire report into a response to your own thread here. It will often allow us to quickly identify or eliminate software as the problem.

You are welcome. See if it works normally in the Safe Mode. If it does, try restating normally, and do not open any programs, to include your login items.

Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once. Please post if this worked or not.

After looking at the report myself I noticed there seems to be an extension in Safari. But I don't see it in the list of extensions in Safari itself. I have a feeling this might be causing the problem in YT. What do you think?

I used to have Parallels installed on my Macbook Pro. But I uninstalled it years ago.
