TiVo Mini, Airport Extreme, Redo

I have a TiVo Bolt, TiVo mini, and a once-functioning beautiful system! We got struck by lightening and it fried my modem, router, TV and TiVi Bolt. I got everything replaced and I have to restart the setup again. I still have in place the external bridge and the MoCA splitters. Nothing has changed there. Now, the router has to be reset. It's an Airport Extreme (another one) and I don't know how to do the "port forwarding" according to Spectrum and TiVo.

Any thoughts? I searched my old conversations but couldn't find the instructions from 1.5 years ago.

Thanks!

The modem I have it connected to is a Spectrum modem. Ubee model DVW32CB Is this what you are looking for?

Yes, thank you. If the following is the User Guide for this device. If I got the correct one, then this device is not a simple modem, but a combination modem and router ... and that is something the LaPastenague has pointed out as well.

You mentioned in your reply to him, that this is not a modem/router, but the documentation says otherwise. Of course, it could be possible that Spectrum disabled the router part, but we would have to verify that to be able to help you.

Again, that is because, the device that is performing as a router is the one that will need to have port forwarding configured on. That is either going to be the Ubee or the Extreme, not both. If the Ubee is being used as a router, the steps to set up port forwarding can be found starting on page 53 of the guide.

The modem is NOT in router mode. Spectrum charges more for that. Thanks

That makes no sense at all. If you are using the Spectrum modem router as a simple modem.. why not return it and buy your own. Honestly just the power saving will justify the cost after a year as well as not having to pay Spectrum rental for a bridged modem.

The airport Extreme is a different one from the original that I used (that one got fried by lightening too). If it's easier for me to buy a nether router or something, I am glad to do it.

IMHO.. I would go out and buy a standard wireless router. I really am not in a position here in Australia to recommend a particular model but your various forums in the US for cable users with Tivo problems will have lots of recommendations. I will just say I like the Asus models from RT-AC68U up. I have now used a few of them and really find they work well.. Synology I am also testing at the moment.. also very good although the interface is based on a NAS.. so takes a bit of getting used to. The main thing is UPNP. The Tivo should have no issues opening ports for itself.

Apple just decided to ignore the rest of the world.. and assume every manufacturer of gaming consoles, TVs, IoT, media players etc would include their NAT-PMP system.. of course none did.

Doesn't mean you cannot get it working again with the apple router.. it is just significantly harder to do.

Ok, we now know the ports that need to be opened for TiVo. What I still need to know is, whether or not, the AirPort Extreme is your "main" Internet router or if it is configured behind another router in your current network configuration? The reason I'm asking is because this "main" router is the one you would want to configure for port forwarding.

So, what is the make & model of the network device that you have the AirPort Extreme directly connected to by Ethernet?

My router works fine - as is evidenced by the fact that I am writing to you wirelessly on my computer.

There is nothing wrong with Apple router to do most internet activities..

NAT routers work easily from the inside.. ie as long as you need the service.. it will open the port for you.. it does not need any port forwarding or upnp or nat-pmp or anything else.

you are saying I should ditch the Apple router and but another one? I just want to be clear that I am understanding you.

I am recommending you buy a different brand router that support upnp.

You can keep the airport router and use it bridged to do wireless access point duties.

Please note I tried to say I am not able to directly make a recommendation.. I would be looking at forums where people who support tivo are active and will give recommendations for the best router.

Find out if people are using the Spectrum modem router in full router mode and it works fine with Tivo. If so that is one possibility.. depending on monthly charges.. which I also avoid like the plague.. but as internet systems become more complex may give you some greater source of technical help in that it is Spectrum's problem.. end to end.. even if they try and blame Tivo.. Once you introduce another brand of router.. they will wash their hands.. your internal network is of no concern to them.

Are you saying that with another router I can get rid of all the splitter, POE filter and bridge? My understanding is that this is a Spectrum issue and that I need these things... I may be wrong

If your spectrum modem router is fully bridged.. and the airport is the one and only router in your network.. this is NOT a spectrum issue. This is entirely a configuration setup problem with the airport. Once bridged the modem router becomes a dumb converter between mediums.. ie cable HFC to Ethernet.

I am not sure what all the different products you have are doing.. my understanding is this is because you are getting cable service for both TV and internet via the one service. You will need local help to figure that out.

If you get Pay TV via ethernet now.. none of it should be necessary. You simply connect everything by ethernet (or wireless if wiring is not possible). If the cable service still provides TV it is part of the total cable spectrum (hence the ISP name) and the splitter allows the use of both cable TV box and Internet box.

3. Before lightening struck, I had my previous TVs, TiVo Bolt and TiVi Mini all working well. Now that I have replaced them all, I can't get it working. I had a heck of a time previously getting everything set up in the past -- that's when I had to go buy the TiVo bridge, the POE filter and the splitters. They are all still in place. I have done nothing to them.

The problem is you need to do what you did in the past in terms of configuration to get airport router working.. and with all the replacements the settings could also be different.

Do Spectrum have a home installation service where you can employ a tech for a couple of hours.. ??

My standard way of fixing the internet is DIY.. but I send my car to the mechanic.

I could buy the manuals and tools and self service.. I used to do it.. when everything was simple and mechanical. Now the service centre plugs a computer into the car computer which tells them what needs fixing. I also am very allergic to grease, oil and dirt. Happy to pay a tech to do the job.. !! Get his hands dirty.

There is no reason you should be an expert car mechanic.. or network administrator.. get the person with training to do it.

Great idea to hire someone -- BUT ... For 3 days and a total of 14 hours (literally) I have been on the phone with Spectrum, TiVo and actually for 1.5 hours had them conferenced on the same call. Spectrum does not do TiVo setup by the techs. TiVo does not come to my house. They both eventually told me I had to call Apple because the "real issue" was my Apple Airport Extreme. I may just spring for another router and hope for the best.

I kept everything as it was before the modem was replaced (and everything worked). I had to call Spectrum to turn off MoCA because I have a TiVo bridge, POE filter, splitter etc. The airport Extreme is a different one from the original that I used (that one got fried by lightening too). If it's easier for me to buy a nether router or something, I am glad to do it. Spectrum and TiVo keep bashing the Apple router so I am putting that out there!

The modem is NOT in router mode. Spectrum charges more for that. Thanks

1. Spectrum offers their modem free of charge. They uncharge you if you use their router. I am not using their router. I have my own Airport extreme. The router part of their modem is disabled. My router works fine - as is evidenced by the fact that I am writing to you wirelessly on my computer.

2. So LaPastenague, you are saying I should ditch the Apple router and but another one? I just want to be clear that I am understanding you.
