close spotlight extension

Apple says I have an update to Safari (to version 12) but when I try to install I get a message saying to close spotlight extensions -- I followed some directions I found on web to close but still no luck. Suggestions? Do I need to reboot?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Restart your Mac then open the App Store then select Updates from the menu.
